From Verbs to Discourse: A Novel Account of Implicit Causality

چکیده

We present a semantic theory of causal discourse which allows us to derive expectations about upcoming discourse, specifically when to expect various types of explanations. We apply our theory to the phenomenon of implicit causality and show how the semantics of implicit causality verbs interacts with discourse structure. In particular, we show why certain verbs trigger explanations per default, what kind of explanations are triggered, and why these explanations are closely related to specific coreference patterns. Predictions derived from the theory were tested in a large-scale crosslinguistic production study comparing discourse continuations in German and Norwegian – two languages which display differing discourse structuring properties. The production study fully confirmed our predictions, with explanation types and implicit causality bias distributing as expected. The study furthermore reveals that our semantic account of implicit causality is cross-linguistically valid.

Implicitness of Discourse Relations

The annotations of explicit and implicit discourse connectives in the Penn Discourse Treebank make it possible to investigate on a large scale how different types of discourse relations are expressed. Assuming an account of the Uniform Information Density hypothesis, we expect that discourse relations should be expressed explicitly with a discourse connector when they are unexpected, but may be...

The Causes and Consequences Explicit in Verbs.

Interpretation of a pronoun in one clause can be systematically affected by the verb in the previous clause. Compare Archibald angered Bartholomew because he… (he=Archibald) with Archibald criticized Bartholomew because he… (he=Bartholomew). While it is clear that meaning plays a critical role, it is unclear whether that meaning is directly encoded in the verb or, alternatively, inferred from w...

Strict and Sloppy ReWexives in VP Ellipsis

This paper reports a series of three experimental studies (described in detail in Ong 2013) with three related goals/results. The Vrst goal is to empirically evaluate two competing – syntax vs. discourse driven – accounts of strict vs. sloppy readings of reWexives in VP ellipsis, building on the experimental investigation in Kim and Runner (2009). The results strongly suggest that discourse-bas...

The Role of Conceptualizable Agent in Overpassivization of English Unaccusatives in Iranian English Majors

The present study is an attempt to explore the effect of one of the pragmatic elements of discourse (namely the conceptualizable agent) on overpassivization of English unaccusative verbs. Through employing the questionnaire originally used by Ju, (2000), 206 Iranian intermediate and advanced English majors were asked to choose the more grammatical form (active or passive) in target sentences wi...

Anticipating explanations in relative clause processing.

We show that comprehenders' expectations about upcoming discourse coherence relations influence the resolution of local structural ambiguity. We employ cases in which two clauses share both a syntactic relationship and a discourse relationship, and hence in which syntactic and discourse processing might be expected to interact. An off-line sentence-completion study and an on-line self-paced rea...
